Crystal
clear video
DVDs
feature video encoded via the MPEG-2
standard. This is the same standard that
will be used with HDTV. When
encoding a feature film, a process called
"variable bit rate" encoding is
used, which allows complex scenes to use
higher bit rates, while less complex
scenes use lower bit rates. This
optimizes the amount of space on a DVD.
High-quality
Dolby Digital
and Dolby Surround 5.1 audio
DVD
uses a number of audio encoding formats,
including PCM and MPEG. The most
popular though is Dolby Digital (AC3).
Dolby Digital features a compression
algorithm that delivers CD-quality sound
at a lower bit rate. Dolby Digital
can supply up to 6 channels of audio.
This format, commonly refered to as
"5.1 surround" (Left Front,
Center, Right Front, Left Rear, Right
Rear, and a subwoofer channel), can
provide viewers an audio experience
similar to being at the movie theater.
More
durable than VHS
video cassettes
Instead
of using magnetic tape, which is
susceptible to damage from dust, heat, or
magnetic fields, DVDs are the same size as
audio compact discs. As long as the
discs are kept clean and away from intense
heat, they should last for many years of
enjoyment.
View
movies in "widescreen"
or "fullscreen" format
Some
titles may feature a widescreen option,
which will allow the user to view the
movie on a widescreen television.
Multiple
angles
DVDs
can contain up to 9 different camera
angles, which would be a very nice feature
on sports highlights titles.
Multiple
subtitle tracks
DVDs
can offer up to 32 separate subtitle
tracks, featuring foreign language
translations to song lyrics for karaoke,
or other comments.
Multiple
audio tracks
DVD
allows for 8 separate audio tracks, each
offering up to 8 channels of audio.
Parental
Block Features
Some
DVD players feature parental blocking
controls, which prevent the playback of
inappropriate scenes.
Immediate
access to
particular scenes
DVDs
can instantly access a particular scene,
just by entering the time. DVD
titles are also frequently divided into
chapters to allow for direct access to
important scenes or music.
Easy-to-use
menus for
navigation purposes
Most
DVD titles include menus for navigating
between the main program and other
features (behind-the-scenes clips,
director's comments, chapter menus, etc.)
Digital
and analog copy
protection measures
DVD
titles can be set to prevent copying of
content to analog VCRs with Macrovision
protection, or digital-to-digital copying
with Copy Scrambling System.
Hybrid
DVD-Video/DVD-ROM
Titles
DVDs
not only can contain video and audio data,
but computer programs as well.
Many new computers sold today feature DVD-ROM
players that can play DVD-Video titles as
well as DVD-ROM applications.
